Single room HRV units are often installed after old leaky windows are replaced with new airtight ones. The advantage of a single room HRV lies definitely in its simple installation since no air ducts are needed. These HRV units are usually installed throught the outer wall which is a limiting factor at the same time. The wall shall accomodate not only the fans but also the heat exchangers. The efficiency of these units is usually lower than that of whole house HRV units, moreover the manner of condensate drain needs to be taken in account.
Unlike whole house HRV units, single room HRV units cannot be obviously equipped with (a bit controversial) earth tubes.
