Tučapy Elementary and Preschool: A Comfortable Learning Environment Every Day

When the extensive renovation of the elementary and preschool in Tučapy began in 2020, it wasn’t just about new classrooms, a fresh coat of paint, or barrier-free access. The project also included a complete modernization of the building’s technical infrastructure, which was intended to create a more pleasant environment for both students and school staff while reducing the building’s energy consumption.

From classrooms to technical facilities

The school’s modernization included structural renovations, the creation of new specialized classrooms, replacement of flooring, new technological equipment, and the provision of barrier-free access.

One of the biggest challenges was addressing the heating system. The original brown coal boilers were nearing the end of their service life; most of them were no longer functioning, and their operation did not allow for effective regulation. For a school with heat loss exceeding 200 kW, it was therefore necessary to design a new, reliable, and long-term sustainable solution. That is precisely why the choice fell on a system of heat pumps.

Great emphasis was also placed on indoor air quality. Consequently, controlled ventilation with heat recovery was installed in classrooms and offices, helping to maintain fresh air without unnecessary energy losses.

A cascade of heat pumps instead of coal-fired boilers

A cascade of ten air-to-water EcoAir 420 heat pumps has become the new heat source. The heat pumps were divided into two separate cascades of five units each, which contributes to higher operational reliability and flexibility of the entire system.

In the event of extremely low outdoor temperatures, the system is supplemented by electric boilers, which serve as a bivalent heat source. Stable operation is ensured by two storage tanks with a capacity of 2× 2000 liters and a hot water tank RBC 500 HP.

Another advantage of the solution was the preservation of the existing heating system. The project confirmed that most of the original radiators can work seamlessly with the new heat source, which significantly simplified the entire modernization process.

Fresh air for concentration and comfort

The project also included the installation of 15 Totus Midi heat recovery units. These ensure regular air exchange in classrooms and offices while utilizing the heat from the exhaust air to preheat the fresh air supplied to the building. The school thus gained not only a new heat source but also a higher-quality indoor environment, which has a direct impact on the comfort of students and teachers during lessons.

Reliable operation under control

The entire system is managed by the IR 34 controller, which controls the heat pump cascade, distributes output among individual circuits, and optimizes operation according to the building’s current needs.

As a result, the school now uses a modern heating and ventilation system that is significantly more comfortable, efficient, and environmentally friendly than the original solution based on coal combustion.
