How much energy can be obtained from a solar system and what are the savings?

In the Czech Republic, approximately 950–1100 kWh of solar energy falls on 1 m² of area annually. A typical solar system for a family of four with a collector area of 6 m² can generate 2500–3000 kWh of thermal energy per year, covering 60–65% of the annual water heating demand. In the summer months, the system covers 100% of the domestic hot water demand, in transition periods 50–80%, and in winter 10–30%.

How large an area of solar collectors do I need and where is it best to place them?

For a typical family (3–4 people), the optimal collector area is approximately 4–6 m², which corresponds to 2–3 flat-plate collectors. A rule of thumb is: 1 m² of collector area per person. The best placement is on the south side of the roof with a tilt of 35–40°, but southeast or southwest orientations also work well.

Collectors can be installed above the roofing, placed on a flat roof using a support structure, on the facade, or independently on the property. One collector weighs approximately 40 kg; roof loading is usually not an issue, but the load-bearing capacity of the roof should be verified, especially for older buildings.

How does a solar system work in winter and how does it connect to my existing heating?

In the winter period or during insufficient solar radiation, a supplementary heat source takes over. Switching between solar heating and backup heating is completely automatic. The solar system connects to your existing heat source (boiler, heat pump) via a thermal store, which serves as a thermal energy reservoir. We recommend a combination thermal store with an integrated hot water tank, which enables efficient cooperation between various heat sources. This way, you can use solar energy not only for water heating but also for auxiliary space heating.

What is the return on investment for a solar thermal system?

A solar thermal system is often the simplest and cheapest way to reduce water heating or space heating costs. The return on investment typically ranges between 8–10 years, and it is significantly faster for buildings with higher domestic hot water consumption.

How does a solar thermal system differ from photovoltaics?

Solar thermal systems convert solar radiation directly into heat with an efficiency of up to 70% and are primarily intended for water heating and auxiliary space heating. Photovoltaic systems convert solar radiation into electricity with an efficiency of 15–20%. For water heating, a thermal system is significantly more efficient – for the same output, it takes up 3–4× less area than photovoltaics with electric heating. However, both systems can complement each other – thermal for water and space heating, photovoltaics for powering household appliances and potentially a heat pump. What is the lifespan of solar collectors and how demanding is their maintenance?

High-quality Regulus solar collectors have a lifespan exceeding 25 years without loss of performance. They are made of durable materials (aluminum, copper, special solar glass) and tested for extreme conditions. Maintenance is minimal – we only recommend regular system pressure checks (once every 1–2 months), an annual service inspection, and changing the heat transfer fluid every 8–10 years.

How does the installation of a solar system work and how long does it take?

System preparation and design usually take a few days, though it may take weeks for more complex applications. The actual mounting of collectors and system connection typically takes 3 days. This is followed by commissioning and training, which we handle within one day. Most work takes place outdoors without interfering with your interior.

Who is a solar thermal system worth it for and who is it not?

A solar thermal system is primarily worth it for owners of family houses with higher domestic hot water consumption, a suitable roof for collector placement, and a supplementary heat source that is less efficient in summer (gas boiler) or more demanding to operate (solid fuel boiler).

Ideal buildings are those without installation restrictions (heritage protection, unsuitable roof). Conversely, a solar system is not worth it for houses with significant roof shading or buildings with minimal domestic hot water consumption.
