During combustion, water vapor is released from the fuel, among other things. If the flue gas temperature is sufficiently high, the steam escapes with the flue gases through the chimney. However, if the flue gases become supercooled at any point, water vapor condenses. The resulting condensate may contain highly corrosive substances that cause rapid corrosion and fouling of heat exchange surfaces (tarring).

This can be prevented by TSV thermostatic mixing valves.
